By Sam Bruns Music was good this year. Rock was good, Americana was good, Hip Hop was good, everything was good. And when music is this good in one year, music should be celebrated at the end of it. This year React’s New Years party eve will attempt to close out this year in music in a two-day festival of sorts. The lineup itself has some hype to it, but does it encapsulate 2015 in music?
Noticeably enough, it’s we see React’s Lineup filled with draw artists. No one who has been particularly brilliant this year, but names who will draw a big enough dance crowd. Deadmau5, though a EDM staple, hasn’t put out anything of widely appreciated merit this year. Skrillex made an impact on the pop and electronic community with his new project Jack U, but unless we see a surprise appearance from the likes of Diplo (who’s booked in Las Vegas) or even Justin Bieber (who isn’t booked anywhere), it’s likely to be just another Skrillex solo set.
But despite being headlined by crowd pleasers, React did make an effort to bring in some of this years more celebrated artists. Indie pop band Chvrches both met and exceeded expectations with their sophomore album Every Open Eye, not unlike Canada’s Purity Ring, who also released their second album this year.
This year has also seen more and more genres show interest in the jazz community. Up and coming Nu Jazz artists such as BadBadNotGood and Thundercat will bring their blend of Jazz and Electronics to the party. This will be an interesting addition to the dj driven show, but will add a certainly level of musical stimulation that isn’t often achieved at Electronic based festivals.
The most exciting act that React has acquired for their New Year’s celebration is 22-year-old Chancellor Bennet, otherwise known as Chance the Rapper. Chance has had a pretty exciting year not only in music (his band’s album Surf was free on iTunes this summer) but in his work around the city of Chicago. Every Chance show is a homecoming, so a show that not only celebrates his past year, but his year to come, is surely going to be epic.
So if you still need a place to celebrate New Years eve, consider driving to Rosemont to celebrate with Run the Jewels, CHVRCHES, Chance the Rapper, and thousands of others who want to ring in the New Year with some of the music that has meant the most to them.
